How to Connect a Domain and Install WordPress on GreenGeeks
I purchased a one month plan, which did not come with a free domain, so I had to use one of my own. Often when you connect a domain from a third-party registrar, the process can be convoluted and complex. However, this wasn’t the case with GreenGeeks.
In fact, in the welcome email, I’d received simple instructions on how to update my nameservers to connect them to GreenGeeks. All I had to do was head over to GoDaddy and update my nameservers to point to GreenGeeks, and I was good to go.
The next step was to install WordPress. To do this, you need to login to you GreenGeeks dashboard and select cPanel login.
Once inside the cPanel, scroll down until you find Softaculous App Installer.
Once you’re inside the one-click installer, all you need to do is click on WordPress and then click on Install.
I waited less than one minute for the installation to be complete. Once it was done, I received a success message on the screen and I could go to my website URL and check it was live. It was a simple process.
The only slight issue throughout the process was when I clicked on a link to a help document from inside the dashboard, I hit a 404 error. However, it was really easy to hop on live chat and ask for help that way instead.
My final setup task was to install the free Cloudflare CDN. Again, this can be done via the cPanel, however, there was a slight bug at the time I was attempting to set it up.
Instead of being able to create the free account inside the cPanel (this threw a 404 error when I tried), I had to go to Cloudflare, create the account, then return to GreenGeeks and log in.
I’ve had this issue before with other hosts and the workaround is simple, so it wasn’t a huge deal.
A Couple of Bugs, but Easily Fixed by Customer Support
It’s easy to get set up with GreenGeeks. Even mapping my domain from a third-party registrar was straightforward. Plus, the useful help documents and the ever-present live chat window mean you’re only ever a couple of clicks away from support. It’s definitely suitable for beginners.
GreenGeeks won’t be perfect for everyone. If you’re looking for a host who is more developer-friendly, try Cloudways. If you’re looking for a host who specializes in WordPress hosting, click here to read about Liquid Web.
