With their cute icons and thoughtful color scheme, it’s obvious DesignCrowd put a lot of effort into their website. The result looks and feels great, but unfortunately doesn’t entirely translate to a user-friendly experience. Part of this is because this isn’t strictly a logo design service so there’s a lot of extra content to go through. The rest of it is because DesignCrowd’s navigation isn’t always as intuitive as it could be – you could spend some quality time snooping around for the gallery page before you find it hiding below the fold or behind another link.
Luckily posting a contest isn’t nearly as confusing. There’s a clearly marked link at the top of each page which sends you to the signup form and from there to the creative brief, the payment process and the beginning of your contest.
At the contest stage you’ll be asked to give feedback and comment on the designs you receive. After picking a winner, DesignCrowd will move you to the helpful “design handover” phase (and special page), where you can talk to the winning designer, request small changes and finally download your logo files.

The process was presented as relatively simple and easy, and I took the plunge and bought the basic $249 package for a 10 day competition. Your presented with 'recommendations' along the competition journey that suggest you invite more designers, increase your budget, or buy other services, but nothing compelling. I didn't opt for any of these extras and there's nothing done to make you spend more if you don't want.
This may sound obvious, but the Brief was the most important part of the whole process and it's important that you nail this as best you can. The more effort you spend on your Brief will mean the better quality of designs you receive. Or so I thought; what you get is a relatively high proportion of rubbish designs from designers who either didn't read my Brief or didn't really care whether or not they got the job. I got the feeling the poor designs had been submitted by lazy designers that just 'churn' designs with very little effort and if they manage to hook a client, then it's a relatively low cost acquisition for them.
The good news is, DesignCrowd make it easy to get rid of these low lifers in a diplomatic and polite way by excluding them from further submissions.
I ended up with 64 designs of which we short listed three, and awarded one. The three short listed were keen to make changes to their initial design and put in the effort, which I appreciated. I got what I wanted and I hope they felt they got good feedback from me in return - it's important to do this regularly and I reviewed all new work daily to help the designers (and me).
Reading some of the other feedback here I actually had to double check the other reviewers were talking about the same company. I can't say I experienced any failing in their product.
In the end I was happy with my design, the cost, and service. I'd use DesignCrowd again, and I'd recommend their service.

When I contacted the online customer service rep, I got the run around. I made sure to receive an email stating the refund request had been processed before ending my conversation.

I only received 5 designs, 4 of which were super low quality.
I have called designcrowd.com asking for a refund, but they will not issue one.
They simply say I "Guaranteed" payment. When I try to explain to them that they
did not provide what they promised me -- 20 designs over a 5 day period, they
simply repeat that I "Guaranteed" payment.
They tell me they will "call me back with a decision" but never do.
Basically, design crowd promised me 20 designs to choose from,
failed to perform, and decided to keep my money.
This company is super-unethical and shows zero interest in providing the service
provided once they have your money, and obviously has zero value for a customer.

Now, I am not happy about DC storing my bank information. Upon, me trying to upload my 2nd project I had some difficulties. As I was trying to start a paragrah after greeting Goh, I hitted the entered button expecting to move to the next line and it processed a payment $99.00. Immediately, I was upset to learn my credit card information was stored and a payment was processed without pushing the correct button to submit payment. At the same time, I didnt have the opportunity to upload any information. Meantime, I called customer service whom never returned any of my phones about my concern. That is when I stay calm and returned to the website to find this project was stored under my account and I resumed uploading pertinent information. The point of sharing is the website is user friendly and please be aware your credit information is saved. BUT THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN AND I WAS OPEN. I EXPLAIN EVERYTHING AND HE WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE. AGAIN THANKS GOH

As with most design contests, feedback is lacking. There ain't much to do to get the contest holders to offer feedback. I always try to leave a comment meant to eliict a response...if it doesn't come, I don't join. Period
DesignCrowd is my last choice of sites to participate on...until greater transparency is achieved its almost pointless to participate.

Working with a single designer is a bigger bang for your buck. They know they are the only one competing and so they actually submit quality designs because it's worth their time.
Design crowd isn't worth the designer's time or yours.

I was lured to their 100% satisfaction guarantee. After putting in the design brief, you play around with the budget. I was promised 50-65 designs from 23 designers for the amount I specified. After you make the payment, you keep getting bombarded with messages on the site as well as via email that you should add all sorts of PAID upgrades to ensure you get designs. You are also introduced to their REAL cancellation policy: only the amount to the designer is refundable. The DesignCrowd fees are NOT.
I have waited a few days only to receive one "serious" offer from a designer which included 5 variations which were roughly the same (move something a little here or there or change color). 2 more designers made some horrible designs that I would be ashamed to even bring up. In total 3 designers and 15 variations of the same 3 designs. Nothing like the 50-65 and 23 designers.
I have contacted DesignCrowd already at the start asking about the low turnout. All I could get was, please upgrade or invite designers. They also said they would send invites on my behalf. This resulted in several spam emails per day say: designer X accepted (and usually rejected) your invitation. Who cares??? They also included regular CRM emails urging me to upgrade my contest (paid) to get more offers.
When trying to cancel the contest and get a refund, they would not let me do that for 10 days until the official close of the contest and then they wanted another week to process it. In any case, they would not refund THEIR fee. So at the end of the day, they want to make money even though the buyer did not get what he wanted and the designers did not get anything. Nice marketplace!
I have to mention that I ran a contest with 99Designs where the results were not much better. Although 99Designs insisted on calling them via phone to cancel, they did make a FULL refund.
I think that the promise of a design contest sounds nice in theory, in practice it proved a waste of time and money for me. Better to spend a little more time evaluating designers and commissioning one or two for a small project and if you are happy, for more work.
