Yahoo Mail Adds New AI Features

Yahoo is launching new AI features and upgrading existing ones for Yahoo Mail. The new AI features will focus on saving users time and money, with the goal of elevating the platform’s user experience.

One of the most notable additions is Shopping Saver. This feature, unique to Yahoo Mail, tracks unused gift cards, store credits, and discount codes across user inboxes. The tool then drafts suggested messages to ask vendors to apply those savings after the purchase has been made.

“In total, US consumers have $23 billion in unused gift cards and credits, and we hope our new tools will help users gain a fraction of that back in their wallets,” Josh Jacobson, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Yahoo Mail, explained in the official press release.

Yahoo is also enhancing several of its existing AI features, including its search experience and Writing Assistant. Its new search mode enables users to find old emails using questions rather than relying only on keywords. Users can choose between asking a question or selecting from a list of common questions. Yahoo Mail also introduced new search filters to help users find what they’re looking for faster.

The Writing Assistant now features more tones. Previously, this tool that drafts suggested replies could only write in a professional or casual tone. With the latest beta expansion, the user can “choose their desired tone like urgent, grateful, or apologetic.”

Yahoo relies on Google Cloud’s AI platform to develop generative AI capabilities for Yahoo Mail. While the company’s AI beta experience was exclusive to iOS users, desktop users will now also get a chance to test its new AI tools. Unfortunately, only users in the US can request access. The company is buckling up for a public release but hasn’t revealed an exact date for the rollout.

Enhancing email services with generative AI capabilities has gained popularity ever since the introduction of AI chatbot ChatGPT in late 2022. Since then, Google’s Gmail introduced an AI email writing assistant, while Microsoft’s Outlook added AI email summaries.
