10 Best Moodle Hosting: Unmanaged & Managed Solutions in 2025

The first challenge in finding the best Moodle hosting provider is making sure the host meets Moodle’s server requirements. While shared hosting may be fine for a new or very small online learning site, it can’t guarantee consistent access to the resources you’d need for larger classrooms.

In fact, the suggested minimum running requirements for Moodle include dedicated RAM and CPU resources that most shared plans don’t offer. You’ll need dedicated resources from virtual private servers (VPS), cloud, or dedicated server hosting, ideally with added performance optimizations such as caching solutions and a content delivery network (CDN).

Over the years, our team has tested hundreds of hosting services, including some notable Moodle-friendly options. I’ve rounded up the best based on our performance results. I also considered each vendor’s unique Moodle offerings, including free Moodle migrations, 1-click Moodle installs (or preinstalled Moodle), and other handy Moodle tools and features.

Above all, I found that Hostinger offers the most standout Moodle solution. Its VPS hosting plans deliver impressively fast performance alongside a nice set of dedicated resources and are available at low prices. Read on to learn more and to see if any other top options better meet your requirements.

Short on Time? These Are the Best Web Hosts for Moodle in 2025

  1. Hostinger Reliable VPS Moodle hosting plans with 1-click installation and generous first-term discounts.
  2. ScalaHosting Powerful managed cloud VPS and cloud cluster solutions with free Moodle migrations and installations.
  3. IONOS Budget unmanaged VPS hosting for technical users who want to reduce costs.

What We Look For in the Best Web Hosts for Moodle

When choosing web hosting services for Moodle, I prioritized features that help you meet the platform’s heavy demands:
  • Powerful hosting options. I looked for Moodle-specific hosting plans that guarantee enough dedicated resources to run and scale an efficient classroom.
  • One-click installs. As Moodle recommends that you download the official Moodle installer directly from its official website to ensure you have the latest and most secure version, you’ll need some basic web administration experience to complete the installation process manually. That’s why I looked for plans with an automatic Moodle installation or 1-click installer.
  • Strong performance and reliability. The last thing you want is for your Moodle site to load slowly or crash. Features like SSD storage (NVMe is ideal), CDNs, caching optimizations, and uptime guarantees ensure your Moodle site remains fast and accessible to your users at all times.
  • High storage space and bandwidth. Moodle sites often require significantly more space for videos, images, audio, and downloadable files than the average site. I’ve opted for hosts that offer unlimited or high storage limits along with plenty of bandwidth to accommodate data transfer.
  • Managed hosting options. A fully managed hosting plan generally includes setup, configuration, updates, and maintenance of your Moodle server. This is ideal if you’re a beginner or if you have limited time.
Just like any software, you must fulfill a number of important requirements to properly run Moodle:
  • Storage space: You’ll need 200 MB storage for the Moodle system files, but the platform recommends a minimum of 5 GB to accommodate your website and course resources.
  • OS and web server: As Moodle is developed in Linux using Apache and PHP, you should run it in this environment. However, Moodle can run on other platforms, including Windows, Nginx, and OpenLiteSpeed.
  • Database: Moodle is compatible with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle. The exact version you need depends on the Moodle version you’re running. You can check the exact requirements for your particular database on the Moodle website.
  • CPU cores: Moodle requires a minimum of a 1 GHz single-core processor but recommends using a 2 GHz dual-core processor or higher.
  • RAM: You’ll need at least 512 MB, but 1 GB or more is recommended. 8 GB RAM is ideal for large Moodle websites, such as those used by colleges, universities, government organizations, or corporations.

Hostinger Moodle VPS hosting features
Hostinger’s generous first-term VPS discounts extend to Moodle hosting
Hostinger offers affordable unmanaged Moodle VPS hosting plans that are ideal for medium traffic sites. With fast NVMe SSD storage and data centers across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, you’ll be getting impressive loading speeds for the price – our test site loaded in at around 1.72 seconds on Hostinger’s VPS plan. You’re also backed by a 99.9% uptime guarantee. For just $4.99/month, this isn’t bad at all.

If you’re looking for a managed service, Hostinger offers that at a great price, too ($7.99/month). Its managed cloud hosting plans range up to 300 GB NVMe storage, 12 GB RAM, and 6 CPU cores, along with unlimited bandwidth – plenty for a bigger Moodle site. That said, Hostinger’s VPS plans offer more resources (up to 400 GB NVMe storage, 32 GB RAM, and 8 cores). But do note that the VPS plans come with bandwidth limits (4–32 TB).

Hostinger doesn’t offer dedicated hosting or custom enterprise solutions. If you need more resources, you may need to look to Kamatera or AWS. Overall, Hostinger is a great choice if you don’t want to empty your wallet while still getting great value. After all, you can lock in Hostinger’s generous discounts for your whole first term, which is 2 years for VPS and 4 years for cloud.

Features

  • Weekly or daily backups. Hostinger’s VPS plans come with free automated weekly backups, while its cloud plans include daily backups. Hostinger stores daily backups for 7 days and weekly backups for up to 6 weeks. You can also download and store your Moodle backups offline.
  • Free beginner-friendly hPanel control panel. Hostinger offers free access to its proprietary hPanel control panel (available in 20+ languages) on all plans. With VPS plans, you also get a choice of CyberPanel (free tier available), Plesk, and DirectAdmin panels. Or you can install cPanel or any other control panel you desire via SSH or root access.
  • Auto Installer. This tool allows you to automatically install Moodle and 70+ other web apps, including WordPress, Joomla, and Omeka S. This allows you to easily integrate useful apps into your Moodle site.
  • Free domain name, CDN, and unlimited SSLs. With Hostinger’s cloud hosting plans, you get extra freebies, including SSLs and a free domain for a year. Hostinger’s in-house CDN is also included with cloud plans, which features advanced caching across its global server network.

Managed hosting options  (cloud hosting only)

Cloud: France, Lithuania, Germany, UK, India, Indonesia, US, and Brazil
Storage and bandwidth add-ons  (plan upgrade only)
Starting price $4.99

ScalaHosting's Moodle LMS hosting page
ScalaHosting’s managed cloud VPS includes a free Moodle migration or installation
ScalaHosting’s Moodle cloud VPS plans are fully managed, making them perfect for individuals and enterprises looking for added support. If you’re looking to move from your current provider, you also get a complimentary Moodle site transfer. For a reasonable rate, you can even custom-build your own cloud VPS server, with up to 24 cores, 128 GB RAM, and 2 TB SSD storage. Bandwidth is unmetered, too.

If you need more power, perhaps for an enterprise learning management system (LMS), the host can also custom-build a cloud cluster for you, like the one it created to host the LMS for the Commission of Elections of the Philippines. Clusters are managed, so you don’t need any technical knowledge.

ScalaHosting definitely delivers in the performance department, serving us VPS loading speeds of 0.7s on our test site. But it only has US and European data centers, so its great loading speeds are mostly limited to these areas. You must opt for ScalaHosting’s managed Amazon Web Services (AWS) VPS hosting plans for more locations in North America, Asia, and Australia.

Features

  • Quality in-house control panel. SPanel is free, low on server resource usage, and includes tons of tools, including a free security suite called SShield and the SWordpress Manager. These are useful tools if you’re integrating a WordPress site into your Moodle setup. SPanel also integrates with NGINX and LiteSpeed.
  • 1-click installs with Softaculous. SPanel includes Softaculous, which you can use to install Moodle and many web apps in a few clicks.
  • Unmanaged options. ScalaHosting also offers self-managed cloud VPS plans. They’re best for technical users who want to manage their own hosting and save costs. You still get SPanel with Softaculous, but you won’t get free automatic daily backups, as this is only included with managed cloud VPS.
  • A wide selection of paid add-ons. You can purchase various add-ons from ScalaHosting, including discounted licenses for WHMCS, cPanel, and LiteSpeed. Plus, you can add extra storage, cores, RAM, and backups to your order or any time thereafter.

3. IONOS: Cheap VPS Plans For In-House Teams and Hands-On Managers

IONOS' VPS hosting landing page
IONOS has quality VPS hosting at a price that’s hard to beat
If you have the time and resources and you’d like to have full control over your Moodle server and setup, IONOS has one of the best unmanaged VPS offerings out there in terms of value. Not only can you get a VPS for as little as $2.00, but these plans even include fast NVMe SSD storage.

You can choose from Linux and Windows VPS plans, which is rare. Windows VPS plans come at a premium, but IONOS keeps its plans very affordable compared to the competition. IONOS also offers an enterprise solution called Cloud Compute, which is ideal for large online classes.

That said, IONOS didn’t perform well in our support tests. IONOS also doesn’t actually offer any Moodle guides, Moodle plans, or managed options for Moodle, which is why I mainly recommend it if you’re already familiar with the platform.

Features

  • Unlimited bandwidth. IONOS offers unlimited bandwidth on its VPS, cloud, and dedicated plans, which is ideal if your students are accessing and downloading large amounts of course material.
  • 1 Gbps bandwidth. Aside from offering unlimited bandwidth, IONOS also allows for transfer speeds of up to 1 Gbps. While not as fast as some premium hosts (Kamatera has a 10 Gbps port), it’s definitely faster than average, especially for a budget host.
  • Ample resources. IONOS’ VPS resources go up to 12 cores, 24 GB RAM, and 720 GB NVMe SSD storage. If you opt for a cloud plan, those numbers increase to 24 cores, 48 GB RAM, and 480 GB NVMe SSD storage.
  • Full root access. In order to configure your server, you need root or, at a minimum, SSH access. IONOS offers full root access on its VPS plans, so you can install your Moodle scripts and configure, optimize, and manage your server and resources exactly the way you want to.

Managed hosting options (Cloud Compute enterprise solutions only)
Data center locations VPS and cloud: US, UK, Germany, and Spain
Storage and bandwidth add-ons (backup and general storage)
Starting price $2.00

Kamatera's Moodle hosting landing page
Kamatera’s 100% customizable cloud servers can be scaled up or down with ease
Kamatera offers a variety of custom cloud hosting configurations, from budget solutions to enterprise infrastructure. Moodle comes preinstalled, and you can choose from two of the latest Moodle versions. You can also opt for fixed per-month payments or flexible per-second billing and configure your cloud server to your liking. Total storage, CPU cores, RAM, bandwidth, and data center location is completely up to you.

Not that tech savvy? Optional managed services are also available as an add-on for a set monthly fee that remains the same regardless of your set-up. Even if you choose an enterprise-grade setup, you get charged exactly the same as someone on a budget plan – a plus for bigger Moodle sites.

Keep in mind that you do need to pay for and set up some necessities, including SSL, domain name, and backups. That’s pretty typical with cloud, VPS, and dedicated hosting, though – and perhaps you even prefer it to be that way.

Features

  • 30-day free trial with $100 credit. You can try out Kamatera’s cloud hosting for free. Your trial is for 30 days and you’ll get a $100 credit, which you can use to configure and run a server in any way you like. When you’ve used up the credit, your trial ends.
  • Extended backup add-on. Despite not offering domains or SSLs, Kamatera does sell daily backups as an add-on. Kamatera retains these for up to 2 weeks, depending on your plan configuration. You can also buy Kamatera’s Server Recovery Option (SRO) add-on to ensure maximum redundancy.
  • High-performance hardware. Kamatera’s hosting plans run on Intel Xeon Platinum processors and NVMe SSD storage, ensuring the fastest loading speeds. Its global network of 24 data centers also ensures you can serve content fast to your audience, no matter where they are.
  • Ultra-scalable plans. Kamatera doesn’t throttle performance or take your site down if your Moodle site experiences an unexpected spike in traffic – rather, you’ll only have to pay for any additional bandwidth or storage you use over your quota. You can also easily upgrade your server’s individual resources as needed.
See our Kamatera review to learn more about plans and pricing.

Managed hosting options (paid add-on)
Data center locations US, UK, Canada, Israel, China, Italy, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands
Storage and bandwidth add-ons (charged per GB for storage and bandwidth)
Starting price $4.00

5. MoodleCloud: Official Moodle Hosting With Seamless Integration

MoodleCloud landing page
You can’t go wrong with Moodle’s cloud hosting offering
MoodleCloud is Moodle’s own cloud hosting solution, and it offers a choice of managed Standard or Premium plans. Standard plans include updates and site maintenance, as well as access to a knowledge base and support. Premium plans let you access higher levels of support and management tailored to enterprises.

One of the reasons that I didn’t place this host in a higher position is because MoodleCloud plans are expensive due to the management service. You’d only want to go for them if you really need that extra support. Premium plan pricing is also based on requirements, so it’s hard to say exactly how much you’ll have to pay – although that’s very typical with enterprise hosting.

If you want the highest level of Moodle integration and management, MoodleCloud is a solid choice. You won’t have to worry about Moodle version compatibility issues, support not understanding your Moodle queries or the optimizations you need, and so on – you can just focus on the learning material.

Features

  • 28-day free trial. MoodleCloud lets you try out its entry-level Starter plan for up to 28 days. You don’t need to add your payment details to access the trial, either.
  • Integrated video conferencing. Sometimes, a recorded video or text-based tutorial won’t do. MoodleCloud’s Standard hosting plans allow you to run virtual classes for up to 100 concurrent users.
  • Priority support. While MoodleCloud encourages Standard plan users to access its knowledge base, you do get support for important issues. If your website is down, or you have an issue or unique query, you can send a ticket via the MoodleCloud Portal.
  • Third-party domain connection. You can connect any third-party domain to your Moodle plan, provided you are on a Medium or Standard plan. That being said, you can also set up a moodlecloud.com subdomain for free on any of its plans.

6. InterServer: Unlimited Shared Hosting Plan Ideal for Small Moodle Sites

InterServer's Moodle hosting landing page
InterServer’s unlimited shared hosting plans can work for Moodle hosting
InterServer offers affordable hosting plans suitable for Moodle, along with a 1-click Moodle installation. While InterServer recommends its shared web hosting plan for Moodle Hosting, you’ll want a VPS plan if you need Moodle for video conferencing or downloadable course materials.

VPS plans are unmanaged by default, but if you opt for VPS plans with 8 slices or more (4 vCPU cores and 16 GB RAM), you’ll get free managed services. Besides Linux, you can also choose from a range of Windows VPS and ASP.NET hosting plans.

That said, InterServer’s shared hosting plan has its benefits. It features unlimited website hosting, ULTRA SSD storage, bandwidth, and email accounts for one set fee. This setup might work for very basic or small Moodle sites. The only issue is that all InterServer’s plans have standard SSD storage, which may not give you the performance you need.

Features

  • Fast transfer speeds. All InterServer VPS plans offer 10 Gbps transfer rates. If your Moodle classroom requires uploading tests and downloading course materials, these speeds are essential.
  • Self-healing hardware. As a security precaution, InterServer’s self-healing server hardware can detect and resolve server errors automatically without human intervention. To avoid disruption, the server will temporarily transfer your data to another node.
  • 99.9% uptime guarantee. VPS plans come with a service-level agreement uptime guarantee. This means that if your Moodle server doesn’t meet this guarantee, you’ll be eligible for account credits.
  • Isolated VPS. InterServer isolates your account from other sites on the server with OpenVZ and Virtuozzo virtualization technology. This protects your site and makes sure your server uses resources efficiently.

Other Notable Web Hosts for Moodle

7. AWS

AWS' Moodle-as-a-Service landing page
AWS offers unmanaged cloud services and a managed Moodle solution
AWS is a generally unmanaged hosting service that – while low-cost and high-performing – can be challenging to set up and run, especially for non-technical users. But if you have the know-how, AWS is a good option for Moodle thanks to its worldwide data center network and enterprise-ready hosting solutions.

AWS also has a marketplace where you can find easy-to-work-with Moodle solutions, such as a fully managed Moodle-as-a-Service package through its AWS Premier Partner, CloudHesive. Not only is your Moodle platform managed for you, but server management and Moodle site customization are also included, along with 24/7 support. Note you’ll need to get a quote as there is no fixed pricing for this service.

8. InMotion Hosting

InMotion Hosting's VPS web hosting landing page
InMotion Hosting’s cPanel plans let you easily install Moodle with Softaculous
InMotion Hosting offers a wide range of hosting plans featuring high storage (up to 460 GB NVMe SSD on VPS) and a choice of control panels. cPanel is one of the main options and features 1-click installs of Moodle and other platforms with Softaculous. Control Web Panel is the other option, and both panels are available with the host’s shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting plans.

You can also get managed services for VPS plans if needed. InMotion Hosting also manages its dedicated servers, making them a decent choice for enterprises. Or, you can purchase an unmanaged cloud plan with SSH and command-line access if you want to configure your own server. Do note that the level of support varies per plan tier. Entry-level plans generally only include live chat with no phone support.

9. TMDHosting

TMDHosting's fully managed LMS hosting landing page
TMDHosting offers plenty of management services for LMS platforms like Moodle
TMDHosting is another host that offers fully managed Moodle hosting plans. If you need a host that handles more than your server, it’s one to consider. I appreciate the wide range of free features, which include a 1-click LMS installer, cPanel, backups (select plans), and SSLs.

The host also offers free LMS plugin installations and a free LMS site transfer. You can even host a course for $9.52/month on a Starter plan. Not bad for a fully managed SaaS and hosting service with a full suite of features and tools, plus freebies. These are shared hosting plans, though, so I’d only consider them for small Moodle sites with low traffic.

10. hosting.com

hosting.com's unmanaged Linux VPS landing page
Hosting.com has great deals on unmanaged VPS that will work great with Moodle
If you’re looking for low-cost unmanaged VPS servers for a bigger Moodle site, hosting.com might be worth a look. It has some excellent deals (just a few dollars a month) for unmanaged VPS. The total storage is generous, starting at 80 GB SSD and going up to 640 GB. You can also get between 2–16 cores and 4–32 GB RAM.

Managed VPS plans come with free cPanel and CloudLinux Solo licenses and the Imunify360 security suite. Altogether, these will cost you about $45.99/month – basically, what you’d pay for the VPS M plan. Still, hosting.com’s managed VPS ends up being quite a lot costlier than the other options on my list.

Get Started With The Best Moodle Hosting For Your Class

When looking for a Moodle host, there are a number of features to prioritize, including storage space and bandwidth. But you also want to look at not-so-obvious things like the quality of a host’s support and the loading speeds and uptime it delivers.

If you’re looking for a fast and reliable VPS for your Moodle site, Hostinger is my top recommendation. Its Moodle plans offer 1-click installs, ample resources, and solid performance at wallet-friendly prices.

But if a managed or enterprise Moodle service is your main priority, ScalaHosting might be a better fit. It offers Moodle cloud plans with a free installation or site transfer and custom-managed cluster solutions for enterprise sites.

Alternatively, if you’re quite capable of managing your own server and are looking for a low-cost unmanaged VPS service, go with IONOS. It gives you everything you need to put together a fast Moodle site, including NVMe SSD storage and 1 Gbps bandwidth.

FAQ

What factors should I consider when choosing the best Moodle hosting provider?

A fast service with enough storage and bandwidth is crucial for Moodle, especially for multimedia-heavy courses. Hostinger has fast loading speeds with SSD or NVMe storage and generous bandwidth. Opting for a scalable service will also ensure you have options when your user base grows.

Is shared, VPS, cloud, or dedicated hosting better for Moodle?

Shared hosting may be incompatible with Moodle’s resource demands, while VPS, cloud, and dedicated hosting often offer the necessary resources. Cloud hosting allows for easier scaling, while dedicated hosting is best for enterprises that need maximum resources. ScalaHosting offers managed cloud clusters that can deliver enterprise-grade performance.

How can I ensure my Moodle site can handle a large number of users?

For Moodle, you’ll need a hosting plan with a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 512 MB RAM, and 200 MB storage. Choose a provider with powerful processors and fast storage (NVMe SSD). Also, look for a host that has a wide selection of plans and resources so you can easily scale when your class grows. Kamatera’s cloud plans let you scale as needed without upgrading your plan.

Can I migrate my existing Moodle site to a new hosting provider?

Yes, migrating a Moodle site is possible. Select hosts like ScalaHosting offer free transfers or automated migration tools. You’ll need to check with your host to make sure managed Moodle transfers are available, as it’s not very commonplace.

Which web host is best for Moodle?

With Moodle-specific VPS plans with above average loading speeds and uptime, Hostinger is excellent for Moodle hosting. Its platform uses AMD EPYC processors and ultra-fast NVMe storage for peak performance. There’s also an AI assistant to help you set up your learning environment.
