Axel Springer and OpenAI have announced a global partnership to promote sustainable journalism in the world of AI. This will grant ChatGPT access to recent and authoritative data from the publisher and in turn, Axel Springer will gain support in driving its AI initiatives.

Axel Springer has become the second publishing house to partner with OpenAI, with the Associated Press striking a deal in July. This initiative ensures a tighter integration between journalism and AI.

Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, says the company “wants to explore the opportunities of AI empowered journalism – to bring quality, societal relevance and the business model of journalism to the next level.”

Starting in the first quarter of 2024, ChatGPT users will benefit from a ChatGPT that has trained with more recent and verified data. ChatGPT responses to relevant queries will include summaries of “selected global news content,” including content normally only accessible with a subscription. As soon as , the articles will become available to ChatGPT.

ChatGPT’s responses will identify sources and provide links to the full articles to allow users to gather more information and provide Axel Springer’s media brands with increased reach. “We are deeply committed to working with publishers and creators around the world and ensuring they benefit from advanced AI technology and new revenue models,” said Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI.

Through the partnership, Axel Springer will create a new revenue source by monetizing the data OpenAI is using to train its models and will also receive support on its AI-powered initiatives built on OpenAI technology.

Axel Springer is a media company founded in Germany in 1946. It has expanded over the last seven decades to become active in more than 40 countries. Axel Springer has a proven track record of embracing new technologies successfully and has continually adapted to the quickly changing digital world.
