Meta Launches Short-Form AI-Generated Video Feed
Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has announced “Vibes”, a new feed for the Meta AI app and meta.ai dedicated exclusively to sharing and creating short-form, AI-generated video content. The announcement was met with mostly negative reactions from users.
Vibes will replace the classic “Discover” feed on the Meta AI platform, which allowed users to share their AI prompts and interactions with Meta AI. According to Meta’s VP of product Connor Hayes, the feed was meant to show people what they could do with AI, with “Vibes” being the next iteration of the same principle.
“Vibes is designed to make it easier to find creative inspiration and experiment with Meta AI’s media tools. As you browse, you’ll see a range of AI-generated videos from creators and communities. The feed will become more personalized over time, and if something catches your eye, you can create your own video, remix what you see, and share it with friends and followers,” reads the company’s official announcement.
According to the company, users will have the option to generate videos or add new visuals and music to existing videos, similarly to how TikTok works.
On Zuckerberg’s own Instagram feed, top comments under the announcement included “gang nobody want this,” “not a single person is gonna use this,” and simply “ew.”
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, announced that the company would be partnering with AI image generators Midjourney and Black Forest for Vibes as the company further develops its in-house models. In June, multimedia giants Disney and Universal sued Midjourney for copyright infringement, though it is currently unclear how these issues will affect Meta’s newest feed.
This move comes as other companies look for ways to reduce the amount of AI-generated content on their platforms. YouTube, one of Meta’s biggest contenders in the short-form video space, recently announced that it would crack down on generated and “inauthentic” content.
The move comes amid growing competition. Recently, OpenAI unveiled its own AI short-form video platform.
