TikTok Rolls Out TikTok Pro in EU With Built-in Charity Program
TikTok has introduced a new version of its app, “TikTok Pro,” across several European countries, including Germany, Portugal, and Spain. The app features the new “Sunshine Programme,” which enables users to support charities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) directly through the platform.
The Sunshine Programme helps charitable organizations reach new audiences, while encouraging TikTok Pro users to support them. Users (over 18 years old) can earn “virtual Sunshine” (up to a certain limit) by referring others to join or interacting with charity-related posts. They can then gift it to a charity of their choice that is part of the Sunshine Programme. In return, TikTok will donate to that charity.
TikTok Pro and the Sunshine Programme offer the same content controls, safety, and privacy tools as the main TikTok app. The same content is also available on TikTok Pro, with some key differences, particularly the lack of commercial elements. TikTok Pro doesn’t support livestreams, shopping features, or ads.
The company describes its aim as enabling people in Europe to “support charitable organizations while discovering engaging and entertaining TikTok content.” Aktion Deutschland Hilft, Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), and WaterAid are the first NGOs to join the Sunshine Programme. The company announced it will be adding more partners over time.
TikTok Pro is now available for download on the App Store and Google Play in Germany and Portugal, with access in Spain coming soon. The Sunshine Programme is also set to roll out shortly across all supported countries.
The company has not yet confirmed which additional countries will gain access to TikTok Pro. It also remains unclear whether the US will be included, especially given the ongoing regulatory tensions over national security concerns with the app’s Chinese ownership.
To avoid a potential forced sale of its US operations, TikTok is reportedly building a separate version of its app for US users. The new app will utilize stronger data localization and privacy protections to comply with American regulations.
