Truly awful client experience – stay away from Upwork
I decided to close my account as a paying client on Upwork because apparently the platform cannot do anything concerning even a situation within which a freelancer is exercising extortion, bribery and blackmail to game an internal feedback system of all things. Many of the freelancers on Upwork, including many less educated from developing countries and having Upwork as the primary sources of income, demand a perfect feedback of "5.0" of 5 from western clients because anything less than such a perfect score apparently places them at a competitive disadvantage because the system of feedback is so inflated. I am Ivy League-educated and teach at university and have never seen a feedback or grading system within which those being evaluated bully, bribe and pressure clients to receive such a perfect score and exact revenge on clients when they do not receive such a score. This happens however on Upwork.
Because one freelancer did not receive the perfect "5.0" of 5 score from me as the client (rather a good score of 4.1 of 5), he opted to change his feedback of me as the client entirely from a 5.0 to a 1.5 of 5 – manipulation and fraudulent.
The Upwork Customer Support Team is inept – you respond to one Customer Support representative and an entirely alternate customer service representative responds to you not having read your former messages and this just goes in circles from there expending hours re-explaining to an alphabet soup of customer service representative names the same request. I would not recommend Upwork to anyone not desiring added stress within their lives from ineptitude and/or fraud.
Worst support and services
Upwork is updating freelancers account even if they cannot charge money from the clients. So this means that freelancers would work free, and Upwork purposely creates this kind of thing to scam people. Instead of support freelancers, who they charge 10% for each payment and hundred of $ for connects to bid jobs, they've decided to suspend people's without withdrawing money from Upwork account. So if you have left several thousand of $ before withdrawing, just be sure Upwork would take care of it and put it in their pocket.
A fuir ! Horrible Customer Service
I dealt with a seller on Upwork who was supposed to code my Figma design for my website for 10 hours at 43 AUD. The result is, he even worked more than the 10 hours and worked additionally for free, supposedly, but I didn't get any result, and I was billed at 43 USD per hour. The customer service was disastrous; I expected them to confirm that the result was not there, but no, on the contrary, they confirmed that the seller had worked well, that there was no result, that the site was not coded, that the promise was not kept, it wasn't their problem. As for the billing issue, they replied that their company billed in dollars, thus evading the question of cheating on Australian dollars, which are worth 0.65 USD.
Freelancers are being too aggressing!!!
I have posted 2 different job posts on Upwork and the amount of noise it created was unbearable. Freelancer from all over the world used every channel of communication available on earth to try to sell their service. Calling my house, sending emails, WhatsApps, forms in our website, you name it.
In the second job post we even specified that any connection not via the Upwork website will be ignored we still received phone calls in 5am in morning!!!!
The aggressiveness of the freelancers made us remove both of our adds before we could even find one to work with. The experience was overwhelming, aggressive and super unpleasant.
Upwork is an unreliable partner.
Upwork is a policy-dependent company. If the authorities of your country will conduct a policy contrary to the policy of the United States - be prepared for the possible blocking of your account. In 2022, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, Upwork blocked the accounts of freelancers from Russia and Belarus. No matter what personal position freelancers take, whether they agree with the military operation or not. Upwork offers freelancers to leave Russia to keep the opportunity to work, which directly means participation in political games. Their mission is "to create economic opportunities so people have better lives has taken us so much further". How hypocritical it sounds. Freelancers from countries with policies independent of the United States should look for another place.
Upwork is a scam ?
A freelancer disputed a $30 work which I don't agree because I could not even uses his work but I was able to uses another hired freelancer's work for the same amount.
Then upwork ask me to pay $875 arbitration fee over a $30 dispute. How does that sounds rational ?!

It is difficult to use this service. I have already spent a lot of money on freelancers, but I have not found an adequate performer. What to do now I do not quite understand, because a lot of money has been spent, as well as effort. Let's think. I hope the service will improve
Extremely Unfair to freelancers
After 5 years of working with the platform, and successfully completing each project. Upwork suspended me because of one client who refused to pay for a project that was completed, claiming he didn't like the work. But a week prior, he had expressed how great the project was. All evidence was there in the chats. I had glowing reviews on my profile. Then the client ends up using the project and getting away with $600 of what he owed me. And still, Upwork saw me as the bad player in this situation. Then I receive a notification in my email from my Upwork account months later, this particular client left me a review, saying how great my work is. SMH - I can't respond to it because I'm unable to access my account anymore. Just proves whether you're among their best freelancer, they can terminate your account for no good reason. Definitely don't look at Upwork as a long-term solution. Use it to make quick money and get out. Don't quit your day job for this, or use it as the main source of freelance work, because just like a Twitter account, you might wake up one day, and find someone reported you for malice reasons or because they're of unstable nature, and you'll be suspended, without the chance of getting your profile back.
