Chiroro-Net seems to be stuck in 2009, which is when its online manuals are dated and its uptime record runs out, so you'd want to contact the company before making a commitment. On the plus side, it owns its own data center and offers 24/7 customer service. It will likely appeal more to Japanese customers than international companies and individuals.

Overview

Chiroro-Net

Chiroro-Net was established in 1998 as a website building agency named Tyrolonet. It has since increased its offerings to include hosting services, live streaming, and dedicated server rentals. Its website is available only in Japanese.

Features and Ease of Use

Chiroro-Net offers shared website hosting, dedicated servers, and VPS packages. Its shared hosting plans provide these core features:

  • 99.99% uptime record
  • Domain registration available
  • Linux operating system
  • Unlimited subdomains
  • Up to 50 GB disk space
  • Unlimited monthly data transfer

Chiroro-Net owns and operates its own data center, which is not always the case with web hosts. It should mean faster response times to technical issues and less chance of resources being oversold. This host recorded 99.99% uptime during the period 2002-2008, but this was some time ago, and there is no indication of how it has performed since.

Developers get the usual MySQL databases (on the top tier plan) and PHP support (limited to version 5.x). You’ll need a top-tier plan if you plan to host a blog, and you’ll be out of luck if you want a Windows platform because all the hosting packages run on Linux.

Pricing and Support

Prices are higher than American or European competitors, but this is not unusual for a Japanese host. You can commit monthly, six-monthly, or annually, with discounts when you commit to more than a month. However, you should beware the initial hefty setup fees.

24/7 customer service can be summoned by telephone, email, or old-fashioned fax. Alternatively, for self-support, you can turn to the frequently asked questions or the (dated) online help manuals:

Bottom line on Chiroro-Net

There’s nothing really bad about this host, which boasts its own data center and 24/7 customer service. However, anyone outside Japan is likely to be put off by the website (which doesn’t translate well into English) and the prices (which are high by international standards). This is not the most modern host; its uptime record only ranges to as recently as 2008, and its online manuals seem to have stopped being developed in 2009.

Pros

  • Owns and operates its own data center
  • 99.99% uptime record (up to 2008)
  • Monthly and yearly terms available
  • Long-standing business with lots of packages

Cons

  • High prices
  • Seems to be stuck in 2009
