Namhost’s Journey from Dorm Room Startup to Global Hosting Powerhouse – Interview with Ardi Coetzee

Namhost’s story is one of growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to reliability.

Founded in 2006 from a humble dorm room, the company has evolved into a trusted hosting provider serving clients in over 80 countries. Speaking with Website Planet, Ardi Coetzee shared how Namhost built custom infrastructure, seamless support systems, and their unique YourMove policy to make hosting stress-free for businesses of all sizes.

Today, they continue to push forward with major upgrades and a renewed focus on giving clients world-class tools to succeed online.

How did Namhost evolve from its 2006 beginnings into one of the most trusted hosting providers in Namibia and South Africa?

Namhost began in 2006 out of a dorm room with a simple goal: to provide reliable, affordable hosting to Namibians. What started locally has grown into a platform serving clients in over 80 countries. Over the years, we invested heavily in building the custom code and infrastructure that power Namhost today, ensuring our ordering systems, hosting platforms, and support desk all work seamlessly together. Much of this was developed in-house by our sister company, Teruza, which continues to be the official development arm of Namhost

For us, hosting has never just been about servers. It’s about trust, reliability, and giving clients the tools and support they need to succeed online. That trust took years to build, but our client testimonials and long-standing reputation speak for themselves: Namhost has become one of the most respected hosting providers in Namibia and South Africa.

What inspired your “YourMove” policy, and how does it make switching hosts hassle-free for clients?

We’ve never believed in locking clients into long-term contracts. It’s not good for business, and it’s not good for clients. The YourMove policy was designed to remove the financial and contractual barriers that make switching hosts difficult. If a client is still tied into another provider’s contract, we cover that gap so they can move to Namhost immediately without paying double. It’s our way of making the transition seamless, affordable, and stress-free.

How does Namhost ensure consistent reliability and performance across services like shared, VPS, reseller, and dedicated hosting?

At Namhost, reliability is built into every layer of our infrastructure. We run on enterprise-grade hardware with SSD storage and use robust monitoring systems to guarantee uptime and speed. Whether it’s a shared hosting plan or a dedicated server, clients can expect the same high standard of performance, scalability, and security.

Beyond infrastructure, we’ve developed a suite of custom in-house tools that proactively monitor services like mail queues, uptime, cron jobs, and more. These tools allow us to catch and resolve issues before they affect clients, ensuring that reliability and consistency aren’t just promises, they are daily practice.

How do you maintain a world-class support experience that earns praise on Trustpilot and social media?

We believe hosting is about people, not just servers. Our support team is available, approachable, and genuinely invested in client success. We resolve issues quickly, communicate clearly, and often go above and beyond what’s expected. This customer-first mindset is why we consistently receive praise on platforms like Trustpilot and social media.

In a crowded global market, how does Namhost balance local Namibian roots with serving international clients?

From the very beginning, hosting has been about global connectivity. While our roots are firmly in Namibia, we’ve always worked with an international audience. Whether it’s consulting with system admins in the US on server migrations or navigating IP regulations with partners in Asia.

A key milestone in establishing ourselves globally was becoming one of the first Namibian companies to accept online payments. That decision made it possible for us to serve clients worldwide from day one, even as our largest footprint remains in Namibia. While it might sound like a simple task, providing online payments in 2006 was a lot harder than it is today.

At the same time, we’re mindful of the unique challenges of serving both local and international clients. One example is .na domain registration, which is more expensive for non-Namibians but offers some of the most creative domain names in the world. Names like bana.na and tu.na are still available at the time of writing, and they can be registered directly through Namhost. Managing these differences is part of how we balance local expertise with global reach.

What emerging technologies—like NFT domains—are you exploring to stay ahead in the web hosting industry?

We experimented with NFT domains but ultimately decided to discontinue them for now, as they don’t yet deliver the kind of utility we believe clients should expect from something called a “domain.” That said, we’re always watching the space and may revisit them in the future.

Our real innovation often happens behind the scenes. Over the years, we’ve upgraded our infrastructure multiple times, moved from cPanel to DirectAdmin to give clients better value, and greatly improved our backup strategy—ensuring all client data is stored redundantly across two separate locations. These improvements might not always be visible, but they directly translate into more reliability and peace of mind for our clients.

Looking ahead, we’re in the middle of a major Namhost website overhaul, which will include exciting new offerings. To be the first to know when they launch, we encourage you to subscribe to the Namhost newsletter.
