Kenyan hosting provider Penum has been in business since 2006. Its plans come with a 99.9% uptime guarantee and lots of features. It could be a good choice if you don’t need multiple domains.

Penum Limited

Kenyan company Penum Limited was founded in 2006. It sells a small selection of hosting plans in addition to website design and development services. Its own website is provided in English, as is its support.

Features and Ease of Use

Penum’s small selection of shared hosting plans come with the following core features:

  • 9% uptime guarantee
  • Daily automatic backups
  • Domain registration available
  • SSL certificates available
  • Up to unlimited disk space
  • Up to unlimited bandwidth limits

Although this is a Kenyan company, you can choose from servers co-located in the U.S. or Europe when you purchase a shared hosting plan. Every hosting plan comes with a 99.9% uptime guarantee that is backed by a bona fide SLA.

In terms of hardware, Penum’s Intel Quad Core servers have a minimum of 8 GB RAM, a redundant RAID 10 configuration to reduce the risk of data loss, and SSD storage for disk read/write speeds up to ten times faster than traditional hard drives.

In terms of software, Penum’s plans support PHP versions 5.4 through to 7.2, MySQL, Microsoft SQL, and PostgreSQL databases, plus Perl and Ruby on Rails. Also included are the phpMyAdmin tool, Cron jobs, and SSH access (restricted per IP and account for security reasons).

There are plenty of features to facilitate the creation of your first website. All plans come with a free website building tool and the Softaculous one-click installer. To sweeten the deal, a Cloudflare CDN is accessible from the admin panel.

Pricing and Support

Penum’s prices are low when compared with other similar companies offering similar feature sets, but there are a couple of caveats: you can only host one domain, and you have to commit for at least a year.

Optional add-ons in the checkout flow include several versions of SiteLock, a domain name, and an SSL certificate. These are extra costs to consider when deciding whether to sign up.

You can contact the 24/7 support team in a variety of ways including telephone, ticket, email, and live chat. For self-support, the knowledge base looks nice but contains only 22 articles in total.

When I initiated a live chat at midday on a Monday, the operator picked up straight away and helped me in English. She (judging from the picture) politely provided perfect answers, including:

Bottom line on Penum Limited

Penum’s team of website designers and developers ensures that you are dealing with tech experts. The limit of one domain is a downside for me, but otherwise, this provider’s plans are inexpensive, feature-packed, and backed by a solid uptime SLA.

  • Well-priced plans
  • Excellent 24/7 customer service
  • 9% uptime SLA
  • Plenty of value-added features

  • Plans are limited to one domain
  • Minimum one-year term length

Penum Limited is a sensible choice for single-domain hosting
