Gate.com was founded back in 1996, meaning they have been helping customers get their slice of the internet for almost as long as it has been around. Their hosting products focus on website and VPS hosting, with the former making use of the Website Builder tool that allows pretty much anyone to create their own website. They have since been taken over by the HostWay corporation, but still stuck to their roots in terms of their products.
Features and Ease of Use
Beginner-friendly, all-in-one, website hosting:
- 100% Uptime guarantee for VPS
- Domain registration
- Multidomain hosting
- Free shared SSL certificates
- Free SiteMail Xchange Mail hosting with unlimited accounts
- Up to unlimited website storage space or 240 GB VPS storage
- Unlimited traffic with all plans
Gate.com’s web hosting plans are mostly geared for building and hosting a website using their Website Builder tool. It’s a pretty good beginner-friendly and feature-rich website builder with templates, handy widgets and features like calendars, contact forms, etc., and a drag-and-drop page builder.
You can also upgrade to a Professional plan or purchase the add-on if you want to run a store on your website with Merchant Manager. It might not be enterprise-grade, but it’s good enough for small to medium online retailers.
Unfortunately though, you’ll need to upgrade your hosting to create mobile responsive websites, which is really something that should be included at every level. What’s more understandable as a paid extra is the great online marketing tools which will help you boost your SEO and help you run email marketing campaigns.
Of course, unlimited storage and bandwidth with most of their packages will also help you scale and grow your website. They offer an outstanding 100% uptime guarantee, but this doesn’t seem to translate to real-life results for shared hosting customers as they complain about frequent outages for their shared hosting. However, their VPS services seems to be much more stable.
If you’re looking for more mission-specific hosting, they offer a range of application hosting services like Microsoft Exchange hosting, Sharepoint hosting, etc. One important feature they don’t provide is backups.
Pricing and Support
Gate.com’s plans start in a pretty low pricing bracket. However, there are some very real restrictions with the cheapest plan, Basic, despite the generous storage and bandwidth which may mean it’s not suitable for a lot of customers.
The Professional plan might seem a bit costly, but it does come with a lot of extra features e-commerce, mobile site creator, SEO, etc. that add a lot of value. If you don’t want to commit to the higher price, the good news is you can buy most of the Professional plans features as add-ons.
With all their web hosting plans, you can also choose either monthly or annual billing. Annual billing also doesn’t come with a free domain, but you do get two months discounted. What’s also worth noting for Windows users is that it doesn’t cost more than Linux, as with most other hosts.
However, for their VPS packages Windows plans do costs slightly more. Still, their VPS packages are arguably even more affordable compared with other hosts than their shared hosting. VPS packages also come with a 30-day money back guarantee, quarterly and semi-annual billing terms, and discounted annual billing.
For their customers, Gate.com offers 24/7 live chat, phone, and email/ticket support. It’s great to have not one but two channels of direct and instant support to turn to whenever you have an urgent issue. Unfortunately, they aren’t always available despite their promise and I have had one or two email queries ignored. That being said, they’re generally pretty helpful and above average, if not the best.
There is also a very good knowledge base with a huge number of informative and helpful articles with step-by-step guides to help you set up and manage your hosting:
