Fiverr, a leading marketplace for freelance talent, released its 7th Business Trends Index, which uncovers the most trending searches on the platform over the past six months.

Businesses on Fiverr were most interested in hiring talent with expertise in short-form video content, AI development (including expertise with AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney), and e-commerce strategy, especially for Etsy and Shopify.

The Spring 2023 Business Trends Index shows that short-form video content is all the rage right now, with businesses turning to independent experts to incorporate it into their social media strategies. While TikTok pioneered short-form videos, YouTube Shorts is taking over the spotlight, recently surpassing 50 billion daily views. As a result, “YouTube Shorts Video” saw a 64,624% increase in searches in the last six months, and “YouTube Influencer” went up 145%.

Roles like “Instagram Reel Editor” and “TikTok Manager” saw a less dramatic increase in demand compared to YouTube-related searches, with a gain of 4,760% and 1,445%, respectively.

The AI boom led by Microsoft’s and OpenAI’s ChatGPT release in November last year has prompted businesses to explore ways to integrate AI technologies into their operations. AI-related searches on Fiverr have gone through the roof, with ChatGPT-related searches ranking almost as well as established platforms like Facebook.

The term “AI Art” saw a 6,967% increase compared to six months prior, followed by “AI” with 1,088% and “Artificial Intelligence” with 56%.

For freelancers specializing in AI, things were busy and profitable. With a growing number of businesses seeking to hire AI professionals, earnings for AI app developers and other freelancers offering technical AI services accounted for the majority of AI-related revenue on the platform.

As the economy slows down, businesses turn to e-commerce strategists to attract and retain customers. As a result, Etsy and Shopify experts were also in high demand on Fiverr. Searches like “Etsy Sales” saw the highest increase of 5,348% in this category, followed by “Etsy Digital Planner” with 2,366%, and “Shopify Manager” with 1,065%.

As the world is at the intersection of an economic downturn and an AI boom, top freelance platforms like Fiverr play a critical role in helping businesses adapt to the latest challenges and trends. With independent talent available for hire on flexible contracts, SMEs feel more confident to explore new revenue channels like YouTube Shorts and new technologies like ChatGPT.
