Can you give us a brief overview of Polkadot Digital? What is the story behind it, and how was it founded?

Polkadot Digital is a digital marketing agency based in Johannesburg that I (Emma Cameron, CEO & Founder) founded in 2015. We specialise in helping small to medium-sized businesses grow with effective and personalised marketing strategies.

With years of experience in the industry, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, and I love using that knowledge to help my clients prosper.

My journey to Polkadot Digital started long before 2015. Since I can remember, I have been entrepreneurial – selling homemade bookmarks and biscuits to neighbours as a kid and working in promotions, events, and retail sales while I was still in school. I’ve always enjoyed working with people and creating opportunities. Not knowing exactly what I wanted to study, I pursued a triple major in management, marketing, and HR, which turned out to be the perfect foundation for my career path.

After graduating, I landed an internship at a digital marketing company, and it was there that I fell in love with the industry. I finally felt like I had found my calling. At just 23 years old, I decided to take the leap and start my own business. Many people thought I was too young, but I firmly believe that there’s no age limit on chasing your dreams.

Polkadot Digital was born out of a desire to provide genuine value to clients while pursuing my passion for digital marketing. Since starting, I’ve been fortunate to grow my client base exponentially, give varsity lectures, participate in radio interviews, and conduct training sessions on digital marketing. Every new day still excites me as much as the first, and I am always eager to help more businesses flourish and grow.

We use a range of software to make sure we deliver the best results for our clients. Here’s a quick rundown of what we work with:
  • Images and Videos: For visuals, we use stock image and video sites, along with tools like Adobe Suite & Canva, to create high-quality, engaging content.
  • Websites: We build and manage websites using platforms like WordPress and Shopify, depending on what suits the client’s needs best.
  • Google Tools: Tools like Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Tag Manager, and Search Console are essential for tracking performance, running campaigns, and ensuring everything is optimised.
  • Marketing Tools: We rely on Meta Business Suite, Ads Manager, Hootsuite, MailChimp, and MailBlaze to handle social media management, email marketing, and campaign planning.
Having the right tools makes a big difference, but it’s really about how you use them. We’re always finding new ways to get the most out of these platforms.

How has the digital marketing landscape evolved in recent years, and how has Polkadot Digital adapted to these changes?

The digital marketing landscape has evolved dramatically in recent years, and we’ve worked hard to adapt and stay ahead. One of the biggest shifts has been the integration of AI into platforms like Google Ads and Meta Ads. Rather than resisting it, we’ve embraced AI because we know it’s essential for staying competitive. It’s been a fantastic tool for streamlining our work and even sparking new ideas during brainstorming sessions.

Short-form content has surged in popularity, and everything now revolves around trends. Algorithms favour brands that hop onto what’s current, so we always stay alert to what’s trending and help our clients make the most of those opportunities.

Another significant change is the longer conversion times. Customers need more touchpoints before making a decision, which means businesses can’t rely on just one form of marketing. Consistency across platforms is more important than ever. Email marketing, social media ads, a great website, and Google Ads all need to work together to nurture leads and convert those who are still on the fence.

We’ve adapted by creating cohesive strategies that connect all these elements, helping our clients thrive in this fast-changing landscape.

Is there anything else about your work that you’d like to share that we haven’t covered?

One element that sets Polkadot Digital apart is that we’re a female-led company with an all-women team. Women empowerment is a big part of our story, and having a youthful, dynamic team brings so much energy, creativity, and passion to everything we do.

Another exciting milestone for us is our upcoming 10-year anniversary in 2025. It’s a huge achievement for a small business, and we’re so proud of how far we’ve come. This anniversary is a chance for us to celebrate not only our hard work but also the amazing clients and projects that have made Polkadot Digital what it is today. We’re looking forward to many more years of growth and achievements!
