Best of the Best and Shyest

Freelance Switch is a ghost town of sorts. There are a great many visitors on the site each given moment and the stats and the snowballing comments on the new posts reflect this. However, when you enter the site every time it seems that the good – freelance of course – elves have created this awesome library of freelancer wisdom just for you. This library had also been packed into neat blog posts written in smart & cheeky language for your convenience. Nothing distracts you from finding out everything you needed to know about the process of hiring and working with freelancers.

The downside of it is that Freelance Switch is just like YouTube in this – here you have been reading a great useful app and the other moment you catch yourself on “that part of the Internet” again. No, we do not mean the cat videos, but the verge between useful information and endless compilations of “freelancer humor” is very thin.

You can’t trust everything you read on the Internet, but the quality control of the materials found at Freelance Switch is very strict. The same can be said about the job postings and the freelancers looking for work through Freelance Switch. This side has been around since 2009, but somehow very fast it managed to turn into an “old-school” freelancer hangout. This means that through a job posting on Freelance Switch you can find a high-class professional who is already past the stage of desperate job-hunting on other sites from our review list. An A-list pro who dropped in to skim through the latest blog posts over a cup of coffee and saw a job posting interesting enough to apply his or her skills to your sorry (or even not so sorry) start-up project is a lucky find indeed!

Too Much of a Good Thing

freelanceswitch-postDesigners and web coders at Freelance Switch tried to religiously adhere to the KISS (“keep it simple, stupid!”) principle. They succeeded, but all in all the inevitable social media feature-creep found its way to this awesome news portal, too. This means that everything is aggressively poised at never letting any chance visitor go. Got in here – please enter your e-mail for the newsletter subscription! Liked an article – why don’t you share it through a good dozen of social networking sites? The funny thing is that once you’d registered finding the “sign in” form turns into a mission impossible. Would you guess that this field will only reveal itself while trying to make a job posting?

The navigation of the site is only intuitive until you touch it – the drop-down menus with 20-30 links in each can really scare the hell out of any seasoned blog-addict.

Everything You'll Ever Need, Theory-wise

Due to the fact that Freelance Switch does not count connecting freelance employers and employees its primary function, it was hard to fit it into out classic feature-evaluation table. However, Freelance Switch does everything it was created to and also provides anyone interested with jobs, workers, latest news and a healthy dose of humor. Freelancers and prospective employers can fill in their profiles and create portfolios that are listed on the site enabling anyone browse through them and find necessary specialist through the search fields or tag clouds.

Forum is another great feature of Freelance Switch – there you can connect with other freelancers and employers to communicate and get access to white-lists and black-lists of the employers and freelancers who have proven themselves worthyunworthy.

Let Me Buy You a Cup of Coffee Once a Month

Freelance Switch is a free resource, but those looking for work through job postings will have to pay $7month to be able to view the poster’s details. This is roughly the price of one cup of coffee in a coffee shop and since many freelancers claim to be living on coffee while coping with deadlines, it would be only fair to pay $7 to those providing you with so much directly applicable useful information. As an employer you don’t have to pay anything.

The score of Freelance Switch in this section is not the perfect ten because, despite the obviously low price some other sites offer considerably more for the same fees.

Looks like the pros who create Freelancer Switch for us are not too interested in helping the mortals.

  • Extremely competent Support Desk
  • Forum
  • Guaranteed reply during business days
  • No live-chat
  • No phone support
  • Things could have been considerably faster
