Mainly focusing its attention to the small-medium sized markets you can gain discounts on your plan by taking out a longer term plan, with a Pro plan for larger organisations which comes in slightly more expensive at $19.95 per month but does offer SLL, Dedicated IPs, and a faster website load time.

Strong Sever Security But Lacking Details

With no details on uptime guarantees we tend to revert ourselves to feedback and customer reviews which tend to show patterns in what to expect. These reviews are positive about uptime and a common barometer for service puts them in a 99.9% range, something which they claim to be near on the site. This in itself is a great positive point for potential new customers.

The data centre is solid and robust, with UPS power backup, monitoring, solid server hardware and 10GB connections. This in layman terms mean you will experience fast servers, stable and secure, for high performance.

Confusing For Newbies, OK For Others

Bluehost uses cPanel, and this is actually good as its interface has been tried by millions of users. The panel itself is a set of tools that help to manage your web hosting, and administer one or several sites. Please, note that many features of cPanel will require additional costs, so use the free cPanel trial by Bluehost before making the final choice.

  • CPanel crowded with promotions
  • Lots of features and web managent tools

Standard Pricing, Discount at 3 Years

BlueHost prices are somewhat standard for the hosting industry – big discounts, but only at 3-year commitments. While this will serve most small-to-medium websites, the Pro Plan gives you more resources, though with a substantial price hike.

Also, Bluehost doesn’t provide any moneyback guarantee, which is specially bad for long-term contracts. The registration procedure is quite transparent – you don’t det any annoying extrafeatures ticked for you.

Limited Support, Lots of Complaints

Bluehost offers a variety of different ways to contact them: via phone 24/7, live chat, email (ticket), and forums. The video help center only has about 60 videos, so it’s not as extensive as some of its competitors.

Considering the customers’ satisfaction, however, Bluehost seems to lag behind, with many vocal complaints from former users. Bluehost, however, makes it a point to keep an active blog and dynamic front page, so its customer base can see that it’s “alive.”

Pros
  • Basic account cheap
Cons
  • Free SSL isn't actually free if you cancel
  • Dedicated $20 service is as bad as the shared hosting
  • Control Panel is a mess
  • Customer Support has gone downhill with long waiting times and poor service.
  • No Debian VPS
  • WATCH OUT FOR SMALL PRINT
Summary I have used Bluehost for over five years now as my main hosting provider, but has got gradually worse over that time. I eventually paid more for their "dedicated hosting" at the large increase of $20 per month from about $6. The server was just as busy with consistent load average of over 70 on a 32 core machine. I have moved everything onto some VPS I setup with Digital Ocean as for $5 I could setup 4 VM's for the price of my "dedicated hosting" with Bluehost. When I cancelled though they tried to charge me $49 for a "FREE SSL" certificate that came with my hosting account. (see section 3.1 of https://www.bluehost.com/user_agreement) As the service was cancelled they can charge for the "FREE SSL" at the full value...

I escalated my complaint and it was finally refunded after about an hour of complaining on their "LIVE CHAT"...

Poor show really, left a bad taste in my mouth after five years of service.

Pros
  • Great features - all the bells and whistles
Cons
  • SLOW servers
  • tech support no longer great
Summary I've been a long-term BlueHost customer. I've recommended them for years. Their customer service used to be awesome. They were a good value. About a year ago, they started trying to up-sell all of my customers. Then the service went down. Now I've got slow sites that are barely functional and technical support that refuses to acknowledge the issues. I have a site that is running so slow, it generates 404 errors. Their answer? Pay extra to go pro. For a site that is much smaller than other sites I've run just fine on their servers in the past.
